Airtel, a leading mobile service provider, announced its mega expansion plan for Tamil Nadu including 100 per cent urban coverage and increasing its current SMS capacity three-fold by March '08.

CHENNAI: Airtel, a leading mobile service provider, on Wednesday announced its mega expansion plan for Tamil Nadu including 100 per cent urban coverage and increasing its current SMS capacity three-fold by March 2008.

Addressing a press meet here, Bharti Airtel Limited Director-South Hub, Mobile Services Deepak Mehrotra said the company's investment in its three strategic business units - mobile, telemedia and enterprise services -- was the highest in Tamil Nadu.

Of the Rs 3.5 billion investment planned this year, a substantial proportion had gone into the state, he added.

Airtel's customer base was nearing the five million mark in the state with about 2.5 lakh customers opting for Airtel every month in recent times.

With the urban market being almost completely covered, Airtel was aggressively expanding to make every village in the state an Airtel village. Rural coverage would go up from 10,000 villages in March 2007 to 17,000 villages by March 2008 and about 65 per cent of rural population would be covered by then, he added.

Mehrotra also said 100 per cent of national highways and over 80 per cent of state highways and railway routes would get covered by the year end, to ensure seamless connectivity.
