2G: SC allows government to withdraw revised review petition

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court Thursday allowed the government to withdraw its review petition of the court's February 2 verdict that had ordered that all airwaves should be allotted through auctions. However, the apex court disapproved of its plea for constitution of a bench.

On May 8, the government's lawyer DS Mahra wrote to the SC registrar intimating the Chief Justice of India that the Centre will withdraw its review petition on May 10, and that a bench be formed at an appropriate date and time. The letter said the government had decided to take back the petition since the Court had allowed a review of only a few grounds related to clarity on auctioning of natural resources, and not addressed any other issue raised in the plea.

"In view of the fact that only limited notice has been issued, the petitioners do not want to press the review petition and will be praying for withdrawal of review petition," the government's legal representative said.
