NEW DELHI: Despite downturn in the tourism sector across the globe due to recession, US Commercial Service and American Centre on Tuesday sought to attract Indian tourists, ranked 14th among foreign visitors who had travelled to the country last year.

The seminar "Summer Vacation 2009: Destination USA" saw presentations made by some top US companies and cities including New York City, Continental Airlines, Disney World Resort and Choice Hotels.

They briefed the seminar about their special features and offers this summer.

"We appreciate this initiative by the US Commercial Service to offer this programme for the travel trade. We in San Francisco believe that the Indian market has tremendous potential which is why we are the first US city and airport to have representation in India," said Helen Tsui, Director Asia Pacific, San Fransisco Convention and Visitors Bureau.

According the office of Travel and Tourism Industries, International Trade Administration and US Department of Commerce, 598,971 Indians had visited the US in 2008.
