PANAJI: The tourist season kicked off in Goa this week with the arrival of two chartered flights carrying over 600 tourists late Sunday afternoon.
The two UK-based charters from London and Manchester landed at Dabolim airport at Vasco in south Goa carrying 345 and 235 tourists each.
Over 15,000 tourists are expected to reach the state by the weekend, says Ralf D’Souza, chairman of TTAG. Though Goa has in recent years grown to become a ‘hot’ tourist destination for Indians as well as FITs, majority of its visitors continue to be chartered fliers. Nearly 80% of the 3m tourists who visited Goa last year came from the chartered segment.
In addition, the state shall for the first time receive charter from Czech Republic, apart from the regular ones from countries like UK, Spain, Germany and Russia. With this, tour operators are optimistic of having “at least a 10% growth” for the current season, bringing in almost 800 charters as against the 717 flights that flew in last season.
