Tourism Ministry gears up for C'wealth Games
Tourism Ministry is going full steam in making arrangements for CW games to ensure availability of enough hotel rooms and is coordinating with departments for the mega event through a Task Force.
Noting that there is shortage of rooms in Delhi and its neighbourhood and that the current room tariff is high, the Tourism Ministry is focusing on dealing with the issues.
At present, there are only about 11,000 rooms in the star-category hotels in the National Capital Region (NCR) against the Ministry's estimate of an additional requirement of 30,000 rooms to accommodate visitors for the Games.
"The whole focus, therefore, has to be on the creation of additional hotel accommodation so that the country does not loose its competitiveness in the international tourist markets as compared to our neighboring destinations," a senior
official said.
He said the latest assessment for the Games indicated that against the estimated requirement, around 13,000 rooms would be available through efforts of the various agencies. An additional 3,000 additional rooms may be provided through the
Bed & Breakfast Scheme, still leaving a big shortage.
A Task Force has been constituted in the Ministry for monitoring the progress of the various agencies in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, he said.
