Public-pvt partnership to give fillip to tourism promotion
Tamil Nadu Tourism department is looking at the public-private partnership route to become the country's numero uno department in terms of attracting foreign tourists to the state.
"Such partnerships will be the catalyst to give fillip to tourism promotion in the state. A major policy decision in this regard will soon be unveiled," State Tourism Minister N Suresh Rajan and Tourism Secretary V Irai Anbu told reporters at Mahabalipuram, a tourist destination about 50 km from here.
A survey conducted in 2004 has placed Tamil Nadu in the second position in attracting foreign tourists and foreign exchange earned through it has increased to Rs.2556 crore in 2005 from Rs.1809 crore in 2002.
Tamil Nadu has retained its third place in the case of domestic tourists, recording an increase of 76.78 lakh tourists visiting it over the 2002-05 period, and earning a revenue of Rs.335.18 crore last year,as compared to Rs.254.66 crore in 2002.
Areas like medical tourism, eco tourism, adventure tourism and heritage tourism would be given top priority and as the first step, gaps in infrastructure would be filled.
Another major venture on the anvil to increase the inflow of tourists in the state, is promoting less-known tourist destinations like Pitchavaram, Yelagiri, Yercaud, Kuttralam, Suruli Malai and Kazhugu Malai, they revealed.
"An intensive publicity campaign will be launched to market our products effectively and the entire department will wear a tourist-friendly attitude from now on," Rajan said.
He said all old buses owned by the department, which badly needed maintenance, would be sold and new ones bought. All government-run hotels would be upgraded soon.
