Kerala's tourism industry which clocked a revenue of Rs 10,000 crore last fiscal, witnessed a 105 per cent growth in the number of foreign tourists coming to the state during the last five years.

CHENNAI: Kerala's tourism industry which clocked a revenue of Rs 10,000 crore last fiscal, witnessed a 105 per cent growth in the number of foreign tourists coming to the state during the last five years.

Sanjay Kaul, Director, Department of Tourism, Government of Kerala, told reporters here today that the plan budget for the year was Rs 100 crore, with Rs 15 crore of it being earmarked for marketing initiatives.

As many as 4.29 lakh foreign tourists visited the state in 2006.

Besides, "the domestic market has grown by 20 per cent in the last five years", Kaul said.

Tamil Nadu contributed the maximum number of tourists, with 36 per cent of the 63 lakh domestic tourists, in 2006, he said.

The department is coming out with new initiatives such as "Wake up to Malabar," which will bring the northern region of the state under the tourism ambit "for the first time".

Other initiatives include utilising the tourism potential of plantation areas, where existing cottages will be upgraded to guest houses.

Responding to a query, Kaul said that the demolition drive at Munnar in Idukki district has not affected the tourism potential of the area.

"We have no reports of investors leaving the place," he said.
