Israel tourism makes strong recovery: Ministry
Tourism to Israel shot up by 25 per cent in 2007, with 2.3 million visitors to the Jewish state last year.
It said in a report that the bulk of tourists came from the United States, with 535,000 visitors, followed by France with 245,000, Russia with 200,000, Britain's 170,000 and 100,000 from Germany.
Earnings from tourism-related industries -- air travel, hotels, restaurants, tour guides, tourism attractions, shopping and others -- jumped to 3.2 billion dollars.
The tourism sector in Israel had previously stagnated since the September 2000 outbreak of the Palestinian uprising, after a massive 2.7 million visitors that same year.
The comeback is attributed to improved security, a weaker dollar and a promotion campaign. The tourism ministry now predicts 2.8 million visitors in 2008, three million next year and up to five million in 2012.
