80% increase in visas given for US in one year

AHMEDABAD: There has been a 80 per cent increase in the visas given to the Indians travelling to the US in 2007 as comapred to the year 2006.

Describing the scene of blossoming relationship between India and the US, Consul General, Mumbai, Michael S Owen said here today that in the year 2006 they had issued visas to 1,25,000 people from this country while in the year 2007 visas were given to 2,26,000 people.

"The government to government contact are important but people to people contact by non-stage actors are more important for the relationship," Owen said delivering Lincon Memorial Lecture organised by Indo-American Chamber of Commerce.

"The Indo-US releations have come a long way from what it used to be in the cold wave era. Before about 20 years when I joined the US government services it was time of cold war and the Americans used to think about India in the perspective of India's relations with cold war opponents," Owen said.

In the 90s India was thought of in the perspective of Pakistan, Owen said, adding that things have drastically changed now and India has come out of dehibernation in the thinking of the US administration.

The turning point was a visit by US President Bill Clinton to this country, after India conducted nuclear tests. Many people had advised him not to take up that visit but he was of the view that India will be an important global force in the coming days, Owen said.
