War between Amazon, Flipkart & Snapdeal set to hot up with Google's Android One handsets

Competition in the booming multibillion dollar Indian smartphone market is set to intensify with e-commerce giants Amazon, Flipkart and Snapdeal.

Competition in the booming multibillion dollar Indian smartphone market is set to intensify with e-commerce giants Amazon, Flipkart and Snapdeal all launching Google's Android One handsets.

Recently, Firefox (in partnership with Spice and Intex) launched two new smartphones, priced below Rs 2,300. Motorola's Moto E hit the markets in May at Rs 6,999. Xiaomi also launched its Redmi 1S at Rs 5,999. Both have features comparable to the Android One devices announced on Monday.

"Sub-10,000 is a big segment in smartphones. It is good for the consumer that Google is also coming up with devices in this segment. I haven't seen the Android One devices yet so I can't comment on them. All I can say is we work on a different philosophy. We don't have distribution or marketing costs and are trying to provide a significantly high-end device," Manu Jain, head of India operations for Xiaomi told TOI. When asked about the competitively priced Moto E, Google's Sundar Pichai said, "To me, it's a different phone. Consumers will now have more choice."
