Vendors, traders warn Orrisa govt over Reliance Fresh
Roadside vendors and traders on Sunday said they would vote against the ruling BJD in Orissa in next election if it allowed corporate houses to open retail shops.
"If Naveen Patnaik government backs corporate houses in their attempt to open retail outlets in Orissa, traders will launch a vigorous campaign against BJD and ensure its defeat in next polls", Praap Sahu, president of All Orissa Roadside Vendors and Small Shops Association (AORVA), said.
Sahu asked the BJD-BJP Government to clearly spell out its policy on allowing multinational companies and big business houses to enter retail business in the state.
"It is for the government to decide whether to back a handful of business tycoons or support over 20 lakh members belonging to the families of around five lakh roadside vendors and small traders in their struggle for earning a livelihood through hard work," he said.
"If Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh could change its policy on retail business, Naveen Patnaik regime can also adopt a positive approach", he said.
Reliance Retail, on the other hand, stuck to its plan of opening more outlets though its two shops here have suspended business till October 23 to prevent any "vandalism and law and order problem" during Dusshera.
