Spencer Retail to open 80 large format stores by 2017

CHENNAI: Spencer's Retail Ltd, part of RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group, plans to open about 80 large format stores by 2017, a company official said on Friday.


In this financial year alone, the company plans to open 12 such stores, Spencer's Retail Chief Executive Mohit Kampani told PTI.

"Currently, we have 26 stores. This is our 27th store. We are planning to open around 80 large format stores in a four year period.. ", said Kampani after inaugurating the first large format store -- Spencer's Hyper at Velachery near here.

Though it is called a large format store, the Spencer's Hyper in Chennai is relatively smaller in size, since it is spread on a 23,000 square feet land compared to other planned stores in the range of 29,000 square feet each, he said.

Noting that the Southern region generates more revenue for the company, Kampani said each store will be exclusively owned by the company offering 14,000 products across various categories.

"About 50 per cent sales comes from South, followed by East at 25 per cent and the remaining is from North and West (regions)", he said.

He said store would have more than 100 variants of nuts and dry fruits, 1,000 variants of imported food products sourced from 30 countries and 600 variants of ethnic products.
