KOZHIKODE: Volunteers of a leading traders body in Kerala went on an agitation at various places in the city, protesting the opening of Reliance outlets here on Saturday.
The activists of the 'Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi,' spearheading the campaign against entry of multinationals in the retail sector, gathered in large numbers in front of the two outlets at Nadakkavu and Meenchanda and raised slogans against Reliance, police said.
Shops remained closed till noon in these areas as a mark of protest in response to the hartal call given by the Samithi, they said.
Police personnel had been posted in front of the showrooms as a precautionary measure, the sources said.
"We will intensify the agitation against the entry of MNC in the retail sector as it threatens the very survival of small-scale traders," Samithi President T Naseeruddin said.
He also urged the local bodies not to grant trade licence to Corporates.
Traders and youth organisations went on a protest when Spencer's opened its first outlet in the state here yesterday.
