NEW DELHI: Protesting the entry of big industrial houses in the retail sector, the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) on Sunday asked the government to impose luxury tax on their earnings.

"As long as the big retail chains are not closed they should be asked to pay luxury tax for using services like power and water in huge quantity," the traders body said in a statement here.

"On the one hand the residential areas are facing huge power shortage on the other, these retail stores are consuming significant amount for energy to illuminate their premises," Praveen Khandelwal, general secretary of CAIT said.

It was of the view that retail stores should operate on the outskirts of the capital for the "survival" of city's small traders and businessmen.
