GHCL plans to enter Indian retail segment

GHCL plans to enter the retail market and will open its first outlet in NCR by year-end.

NEW DELHI: Home textile maker GHCL on Tuesday said it is planning to enter Indian retail market and will open its first outlet in NCR by the end of this year.

"After establishing ourself firmly in UK retail segment, where we have more than 300 outlets, we are looking for the opportunities in India," GHCL Ltd Chairman Sanjay Dalmia told reporters here.

GHCL, a leading multinational company in three industries -- chemicals, textiles and IT-outsourcing, is headquartered out of Noida.

Initially, the company would open its exclusive retail outlets and after that it would opt for franchise mode to expand its base in the country.

Speaking about the company's plan Dalmia said, we would start with the home textiles such as curtain, bed-sheets, pillow covers and such textiles used in the house for purpose other than wearing.

The company has also plans to enter into the furniture and home decorating product segment and is expecting around 15 to 20 per cent of its turnover from the segment.

"In furniture segment, we are mainly targeting the hotel and restaurants and we have a plan to supply all materials needed in hotel industry other than food and kitchen goods," Dalmia said.

Although the company has not disclosed number of outlets to open. The company has acquired UK-based retail chain 'Rosebys' and is going to use its resources and brands to sell in its retail outlets in the country.

When asked about the investment in the segment, Dalmia declined to say anything citing confidentiality.
