FAM plans rally against retail FDI

Federation of Associations of Maharashtra (FAM) plans to organise a rally here on August 9 to press its demand of keeping foreign companies barred from the retail sector.

MUMBAI: Federation of Associations of Maharashtra (FAM) plans to organise a rally here on August 9 to press its demand of keeping foreign companies barred from the retail sector.

The rally would bring together kirana shopowners, wholesalers, hawkers, street vendors, who would be directly affected because of foreign direct investment in the sector.

Next month the federation, a top body of traders in the state, plans to go to New Delhi and stage a sit-in. The FAM members include wholesalers and small retailers.

"Organised retaling would leave 20 crore people without jobs. Let the government first come out with a rehabilitation for these people and then it can open up FDI in retail," FAM President Mohan Gurnani told reporters here today.

The federation has been voicing its opposition against the move ever since it was proposed by the then BJP-led NDA Government nearly nine years ago.
