NEW DELHI: Country's telecom company Bharti Airtel has signed a tie-up deal with US retailer Wal-Mart to open a chain of retail stores across the country, Kamal Nath, India's trade minister said Monday.
Nath did not reveal any details about the deal but said he was aware of the decision. When asked about the deal by The Associated Press, Sunil B Mittal, Bharti Airtel's chief executive officer, said an announcement would be made later Monday, but declined to name the partner.
India's booming retail market, estimated at about $200 billion (euro 160 billion), is currently dominated by more than 12 million mom-and-pop shops. Large air-conditioned stores remain a rarity.
