Amazon India is hiring up to 160,000 temporary workers to meet an expected spurt in consumer demand this festive season, 10,000 more than last year.

Most of the new hires will be deployed for picking, packing, shipping, and delivering customer orders, supporting Amazon’s ecommerce and quick commerce business, the company said in a statement Wednesday. These include direct and indirect work opportunities across 400 cities, spanning large metros as well as Tier 2 and 3 cities, including Varanasi, Kochi, Jalandhar, Ghaziabad, Ranchi, Salem, and Gorakhpur.

“Amazon has created opportunities for thousands of women and associates with disabilities in its network,” the company said, adding the bulk of these associates have already been hired and given the necessary training.

“This expanded workforce will help us strengthen our fulfilment and logistics capabilities and ensure we can handle the festive season seamlessly,” said Abhinav Singh, vice president, operations, Amazon India, APAC, Middle East, Africa and Turkiye. “Many of these associates continue their journey with Amazon beyond the festive period, while several others return year after year to work with us.”

Amazon India has fulfilment centres in 15 states, offering over 43 million cubic feet of storage space for seller inventory; sortation centres in 19 states; along with a network of nearly 2,000 Amazon-operated and partner delivery stations. It also has 28,000 ‘Hub delivery’ partners and thousands of Amazon Flex partners.

Amazon plans to expand its network to a total of 250 Ashray centres or air-conditioned rest stops for its delivery workers by December-end from the current 150 centres across Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Lucknow, and Pune, among others. The company has also introduced Mobile Ashray vans—air-conditioned mobile rest units.
