After Singur, Mamata targets retail sector in W Bengal

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to address a rally of small retailers in Singur later in the day on Monday.

SINGUR (WB): Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to address a rally of small retailers in Singur later in the day on Monday.

Banerjee said she was opposed to allowing the private players entry into retail trade "since it would spell disaster for small retailers".

Meanwhile, work continued to be stalled at the Tata Motors small car plant in Singur on the ninth day of the Trinamool Congress' indefinite dharna as the management said conditions were not conducive for resuming work.

"Conditions are still not conducive here for resuming our work. We continue to assess the situation closely," said a Tata Motors spokesperson in Kolkata.

Agitators continued to block the main entry points of the factory and the Durgapur Expressway was still blocked, leaving thousands of heavy vehicles stranded.

After a Trinamool Congress delegation met Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi at Raj Bhavan on Sunday, party chief Mamata Banerjee said she was agreeable to talks but the dharna would continue.
