Noida authority issues notice to DLF, directs to pay Rs 235 crore for Mall of India land

The move has come after the Supreme Court had ordered the authority to pay Rs 295 crore to one Veerana Reddy, from whom it had acquired the land in 2005 and later auctioned it to DLF, who developed the mall there.

The Noida authority has issued a notice to DLF, asking it to pay Rs 235 crore within 15 days over a dispute related to the land where the real estate developer had built Mall of India, the country’s biggest mall.

This comes after the Supreme Court ordered the authority to pay Rs 295 crore to a person, Veerana Reddy, from whom it had acquired the land in 2005 and sold to DLF through an auction.

The Noida authority has paid the money to Reddy under the court order and the notice is to recover Rs 235 crore of that from the developer citing the lease condition.

The notice was issued on December 23.

“If DLF fails to pay, it will be a violation of the lease deed,” said Kumar Sanjay, the officer on special duty with the Noida authority.

“We have not received the notice yet. Once we get it, we will review it,” a DLF spokesperson said.

Reddy had bought this land in April 1997 from local farmers and later the Noida authority acquired it from him.

Reddy, who was not satisfied with the compensation paid to him for the 7,400-sq-metre plot, alleged that the acquisition happened in a wrongful manner and moved the courts.

In 2011, the authority decided to pay an additional Rs 18 lakh as compensation and Rs 181.87 per square metre in interest, which Reddy refused to accept.

In May 2022, the SC ordered the Noida authority to pay Rs 1.1 lakh per square metre to Reddy, along with 15% interest and an additional 3% penal interest.

The authority filed a review petition against the order, but that was rejected.
