Govt to construct 15 lakh houses under JNNURM
Concerned over housing shortage in urban areas, government is planning to construct about 15 lakh houses under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).
While 55,000 houses are already being completed, construction of more than 3 lakh units is in progress across the country, Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Secretary Kiran Dhingra said here today while addressing the Editors' conference on social sector issues.
"Our target is to construct 3.1 lakh houses by September this year while the total target is 15 lakh houses for the economically weaker section by the end of 2012," she said.
It is estimated that 26.53 million houses would be required by the end of the 11th Plan.
Highlighting the mulitiplier effect of housing sector, she said the construction activities stimulated demand in about 20 related sectors of the manufacturing industry and created employment that is almost eight times the direct employment generated in housing construction.
Dhingra said, "steps are also being taken for easy availability of housing finance at concessional rates."
