Radisson Blu eyes Northeast expansion with hotels in Kaziranga, Shillong and Guwahati

Assam is all set to get as many as 18-star category hotels. General Manager Radisson Blu Guwahati Ankur Mehrotra said, “Talks are on with strategic partners for setting up hotel on Kaziranga and Shillong and coming up with another hotel in Guwahati.”
UNESCO’s world heritage site of the Kaziranga National Park (KNP), Guwahati and Shillong are tourist destination and witnessing huge surge in the inflow of tourist.
He added, “We are adding 85 new rooms to the existing property in Guwahati. Presently it has 196 rooms. Presently we have around 130 hotels across India and we plan to increase it to 250 in next three years.”
Mehrotra added that hotel industry in Assam is doing very well. The occupancy rate in Guwahati stands at 70 to 75 percent. In our case the occupancy is around 80 percent. Besides the tourist inflow, Guwahati is attracting tourists for destination wedding business travellers and Meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions tourism (MICE tourism). We have added 10,000 square feet area targeting these events."
He added, “In the times to come Guwahati will be the Delhi-NCR of East India. Earlier business travellers were mostly from public sector units and government departments now we have good corporate people coming here. At least 25 percent our guests account for pilgrimage tourists.”
He said that there is perception change among the travellers. “People do not talk about the law and order and freely crisis between Guwahati and Shillong anytime in the day and night. We presently employ 350 staffs out of which at least over 85 percent are from Northeast India.”
Mehrotra said that there is decent inflow of foreign tourists from Japan, United States and Germany. “People from these areas come here and explore adventure tourism.”
