Involve students, set up 'Guide Banks': Govt tells hotels

Under the proposal, hotels will train students and prepare a 'Guide Bank' to be utilised during the mega sporting event when the tourist influx is expected to grow manifold creating requirement for up to 30,000 extra guides.
"We are telling hotels to have 'guide banks' of students. This is a new scheme which we have started keeping in mind the Commonwealth Games," Union Tourism Minister Ambika Soni said.
She said that hotels should provide the students a short-term course on the subject and they could be on its rolls so that their services can be availed of at any time required.
"This new programme is part of our 'earn while you learn' scheme. Students can probably earn Rs 1,000 per day," the Minister said.
Soni also suggested that the hotels provide a "sustenance allowance" to the students roped in for the programme when they are not working.
Asked whether her Ministry has any blueprint to control "fake" guides, she said the Supreme Court has already set out specific norms and guidelines which are "quite stringent".
She said her Ministry has organised a number of campaigns under "Atithi Devo Bhava" scheme to sensitise people.
