Incentives for hoteliers in Delhi: PHDCCI
PHDCCI asked the government to provide incentives to hoteliers, who are setting up their properties in Delhi to cater to the Commonwealth rush.
The incentives should be provided in the form of a 16 per cent guaranteed return on their investment for atleast 10 years. The move will also promote investments for hotel owners to invest in the segment, PHDCCI said in a statement here.
Delhi has a shortage of 1.7 lakh hotel rooms and sizeable part of it should be put into the stream before the commonwealth games 2010, it said.
"It is a challenging task to create quality hotel rooms of that magnitude in a relatively shorter time frame and timely completion requires speedy action in allotting the sites, making available adequate credit for construction and finally clearing the building for use," PHDCCI President Sanjay Bhatia said in the statement.
Many hoteliers are not coming forward to bid for the plot because of higher floor prices. Moreover, they are not very sure about the rate of return since the occupancy factor depends on many variables, which are extraneous to the industry.
The chamber also pointed out the need for a perspective plan to put to use the additional capacities created after the games.
"We have to learn from tourism centric countries as to how they attract large number of tourists for longer duration. Newer themes and concepts should be developed to hard sell India as a rich, exotic and varied tourist destination," Bhatia added.
