Thousands of jittery consumers took to social media to demand transparency and accountability from Domino’s Pizza following a data breach at India’s largest quick service chain, even as cybersecurity researcher Rajshekhar Rajaharia told ET he had red-flagged a government agency about the information leak in March.

The data breach involves as many as 180 million users of the 1,314 Domino’s Pizza restaurants operated by Jubilant FoodWorks Ltd. The leaked information includes details of over 1 million credit cards, mobile numbers and GPS locations and have been made available on the dark web. Hundreds of consumers tweeted over the past two days that they were deleting the Domino’s app. Total app downloads for Domino’s stood at 51.2 million at the end of the December 2020, JFL said in its third quarter earnings statement.

An email seeking comment from JFL on what the company is doing to reassure consumers and how it will tighten its cyber security remained unanswered. However, the pizza chain is expected to release a statement to address consumer concerns within a day.

Rajaharia said that he had written to CERT-In, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team about the data breach on March 5 but got no response. CERT-In, which is within the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, deals with cyber security threats like hacking and phishing.

JFL admitted to the data breach on Sunday and claimed in a statement that the financial information of customers is safe.
