VKRV Rao prizes in Social Science Research have been instituted by the Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bangalore for the development of social science research in India in general. The prizes are awarded to persons who have made significant original contributions to human knowledge and progress, applied or fundamental, who are citizens of India, below the age of 45 years and are engaged in research in any one of the social sciences.
Thakur’s academic work spans over themes ranging from water resources management and rural development knowledge institutions, to intellectual history and indigenous theories. Besides research publications in scholarly journals, he has authored two books – Indian Village: A Conceptual history (2014) and The Quest for Indian Sociology (2014). His research straddles three broad fields of sociological enquiry- Political Sociology, Public Policy and Disciplinary History.
He has previously been awarded the Indian Sociological Society’s Prof M N Srinivas Memorial Award for the Young Sociologist (2007) and the Indian Social Science Association’s Prof Radhakamal Mukerjee Memorial Award for the Young Social Scientist (2002).
