Top colleges in West Bengal planning for Meta University

Three prominent institutes of higher studies in West Bengal-Jadhavpur University, Calcutta University and the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta are reported to be testing the feasibility of collaboration for setting up Meta University-a concept mooted by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh—in the eastern region.

Meta Universities allows a student to use facilities like faculty, library and laboratory from multiple institutes for the pursuit of one degree.

The Union Ministry of Human Resource Department has in principle approved the concept of Meta University from its implementation from the upcoming academic session (2012-13).

Accordingly students in India can now be part of credit transfer system, which will amount to flexibility and cross-university education, ensuring credit transfer between participating universities. The HRD ministry has asked Jadhavpur University (JU) to act as the nodal institution for the entire eastern India. .

Meta University encourages tie-ups with CU, JU and IIM-C for not only encouraging research but also offering various courses for students, in subjects such as public health, education and environment will be offered to begin with.
