Students can choose between 2 academic sessions at Symbiosis
Students aspiring to join post graduate management programme or other courses at the Symbiosis may have the flexibility to choose between two academic sessions in any given year.
The premier private “unaided” institution, which has favoured enforcing SC/ST and OBC quotas on the condition that it is allowed to increase seats in the general category, is assessing the feasibility of two academic sessions — one in January and another in June.
“We need to find innovative ways to absorb more students if the central government approves the proposal to increase the number of seats in the general category. One option is to have two academic sessions in a year.
A shift system could also be looked at. We will have to get a feedback from the academic council on the modalities and scheduling of these sessions”, said SB Majumdar, president and founder director, Symbiosis. The move to have two academic sessions could be a trend-setter in India.
It may, however, take a while for the concept to gain wider acceptance as there are issues relating to faculty and infrastructure. The proposal ties up with the suggestion from a section of the industry to have two batches in an academic year to meet the growing demand.
Last week, Symbiosis and few other deemed varisities endorsed the Centre’s proposal to implement quotas with the caveat that they be allowed to raise seats by 54% to make up for the loss.
The Symbiosis society has 33 institutes under its banner spread across nine campuses in and around Pune. Close to 45,000 students are on campus, of which around 1,000 are enrolled in the MBA programme. The proposal to have two academic sessions in a year may not be restricted to just MBA courses.
It could be for other programmes as well, depending on the demand for such courses. Majumdar reckons that foreign students could benefit from such a move. The institute has also made out a case for enhancing the quota for foreign students over and above the present permissable intake of 15%.
