States lacking IT institutions to get preference for IIITs

AMETHI : Government would give preference to states which do not have IT institutions while deciding on the location of 20 new IIITs to bet set up in the country, a senior official said here on Thursday.
The Central Information Technology Development Committee will hold a crucial meeting in New Delhi on September nine to finalise the places for setting up the IIITs, vice president of the Committee Murlidhar Tewari said.
With a view to further develop information technology, union government has announced setting up 20 new IIITs in the country in the near future, Tiwari, who is also the director of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Information Technology, said.
"Preference would be given to states where there are no IIITs till now," he said.
Tewari said that a majority of places, specially the rural areas in the country, were still lagging behind in the absence of information technology.
