NEW DELHI: The National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions has recommended setting up of a Central Madarsa Board through an Act of Parliament, Rajya Sabha was informed on Monday.
This is aimed at "standardisation of the Madarsa system of education" without interfering in the theological content, HRD Minister Arjun Singh said in a written reply.
The Commission submitted its report in April this year, he said.
Singh said the Centre had been implementing a scheme since 1993 providing financial assistance for the introduction of modern subjects in those madarsas which voluntarily apply through respective state governments.
He said an action plan to address issues of educational backwardness among the Muslim Community pointed out by the "Sachar" Committee was under consideration.
Dowry: As many as 3204 cases were registered under the Dowry Prohibition Act in 2005 resulting in conviction of 1256 persons, Minister of State for Women and Child Development Renuka Chowdhury said.
A total of 3592 cases under the Act were registered during 2004, she said.
The Minister said cases of dowry deaths registered under the Indian Penal Code were more than 6000 per year from 2003 to 2005.
In reply to another query, she said Protection of Women under the Domestic Violence Act, 2005 came into force from October 26 last year.
