SATARA: Sainik School Satara, India's first sainik school, will soon have a MiG 23 fighter aircraft adorning its campus following Defence Ministry's decision to release the fighter plane to the school as a war trophy.

The aircraft, which has seen action in war, will be arriving in the school next month, school Principal Col. Sunil Chandra said at a meeting of the Past Students Association.

The aircraft will be stationed on a specially erected platform and will serve as an inspiration to students, he said.
Arrangements are being made to bring the MiG 23 aircraft to Satara, he added.

The school is also likely to get a battle tank, probably a Vijayant tank, as a souvenir within the next few months, he said.

The Sainik School at Satara is the first of 21 Sainik Schools in the country. So far, over 1,000 students of this school have joined the armed forces as officers and some have laid down their lives for the country in 1971 and Kargil wars.
It was inaugurated on June 23, 1961 by the then Defence Minister V K Krishna Menon. The school prepares boys who hail from financially weaker sections of society, academically, physically and mentally for entry into the National Defence Academy and other Defence academies.
