BANGALORE: Professors and university teachers may soon have to clock 40 hours a week. Moreover, it may become mandatory for them to be 'physically' available on campus for at least five hours a day.

Draft guidelines prepared by UGC have been sent to universities for feedback. They seek to fix workload for lakhs of professors/assistant professors and university teachers under the University Grants Commission Regulations, 2009.

UGC has proposed that the workload of university teachers in full employment not be less than 40 hours a week and for 30 working weeks (180 teaching days) in an academic year. Every teacher must earmark at least six hours a week for research.

However, relaxation of two hours in the workload has been suggested for professors involved in administration.
