President APJ Abdul Kalam on Wednesday stressed the need for a greater number of students to opt for entrepreneurship so they could become employment generators rather than employment seekers.

KOLKATA: President APJ Abdul Kalam on Wednesday stressed the need for a greater number of students to opt for entrepreneurship so they could become employment generators rather than employment seekers. Mr Kalam said, at the Indian Institutes of Social Welfare & Business Management convocation: “Generation of entrepreneurs through MBA programmes is important. Recent experiences indicate the economic progress of a few countries, particularly developed ones, is due to the contribution of small entrepreneurs. We need such entrepreneurs in large numbers for developing and transforming our village clusters into sustainable economic units.”

Mr Kalam added that West Bengal had over 37,000 villages with a population of 8 crore, based on the 2001 census. According to him, development of these rural areas can be achieved through the Provision of Urban Amenities in Rural Areas (PURA) programme. “I will recommend IISWBM to undertake project work for creating at least 19 PURAS in the 19 districts of West Bengal,” said the president.

IISWBM director Ashoke K Dutta said the institute has been championing the cause of sustainable development through its expertise in the field of environment and energy management. “We are looking forward to sustained institutionalised support from the government to carry out our activities in the field of sustainable development, which constitutes the new vision of progress,” he said.
