NSE, CBSE tie up for financial markets courses

The financial services sector that accounts for more than half the economy is scheduled to make its presence felt in the education system.

NEW DELHI: The financial services sector that accounts for more than half the economy is scheduled to make its presence felt in the education system. The National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Wednesday decided to groom plus-two students for a career in the sector by introducing a course in financial markets management, reports.

The course offers training in financial markets, economics and accounting from academic year 2008-09. Initially 58 schools will offer the course. Financial literacy helps people to manage their lives better.

Around 60% of the people do not have bank accounts and do not know about economic indicators like inflation. Low financial literacy means financial exclusion, NSE MD & CEO Ravi Narain said.

It is important for the industry to have interface schools to groom the next generation as employable work force, NSE MD & CEO Ravi Narain said.

CBSE officials said that at least three universities have come forward to recognise the course so that students who take these up will find it easier to pursue degrees in commerce, economics and business administration. We would pursue with more universities to recognise the course, said a top CBSE official.

The Board, which has over 9,000 schools under it, will eventually offer courses in retail management, healthcare, insurance and banking.
