More educational exchanges needed between India, UK: Lord Paul
NRI industrialist Lord Swraj Paul has stressed the need for increasing educational exchanges between India and the UK, saying this is one of the prerequisites of globalisation.
"Globalisation is much more than money. It also encompasses education, culture and immigration issues," Lord Paul told reporters after a visit to the core ashram area of Santiniketan.
"Being in Britain, I think we can play a better global role if we have an open society," he said.
Reiterating that his visit to West Bengal was aimed at finding ways to bring the state closer to the UK, he said, "normally parliamentary delegations' visits happen on a country-to-country basis. But I am from Kolkata and I am very happy to bring the delegation to West Bengal."
Earlier, Lord Paul and his team of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association was received at the Visva-Bharati administrative building by the university vice-chancellor Prof Rajat Kanta Roy.
Roy explained to the delegation the unique feature of the university and took Lord Paul and his team on a visit to the core ashram area on foot.
Beginning from Chhatimtala, where Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore's father Maharshi Debendranath Tagore was initiated into the Brahma religion, the team went on to visit the Natun Bari, where Mahtma Gandhi had kept his son and grandson before shifting to Sabarmati Ashram, main Santiniketan building, Kala Bhavan and Sangeet Bhavan.
