MNCs stem IITians' exodus
The hallowed institutes, on their part, are tightening the screws on recruiters.
“British Telecom used to regularly hire IIT Guwahati students,’’ he says. “It does so today as well, but for its Bangalore operations.’’
Deepak Phatak, former head of the computer science department at IIT Bombay, who conducted exit interviews with students from 1991 to’ 94, remembers almost everyone saying that they were flying to the US. “But in the last two years, only five or six students from this stream have gone abroad,’’ he says.
“With India offering job opportunities and high salaries, students are preferring to stay back in the comfort of their homes. Only a few academically inclined ones who want to pursue high-end research are going abroad, but this amounts to less than 10% of the students.’’
Screws tighten on recruiters
The hallowed institutes, on their part, are tightening the screws on recruiters. IIT Kharagpur does not allow foreign recruiters to participate in their campus placement process. G Sinha, head (training and placement), says that the institute contacts only those companies that have operations in India.
“However, an MNC or even an Indian public sector enterprise could recruit from our institute and later station the student abroad,’’ he clarifies.
At most IITs, companies have to mention the location where the student will be posted in the job announcements. Bhattacharjee of IIT Guwahati says that at their campus, companies which want to recruit students for the India operations are “preferred’’.
Kushal Sen, who handles the placements for IIT Delhi, says that another reason for asking for the location is that students get several offers and they may have a preference for one particular place over another, whether in India or abroad. Like Sinha, Sen clarifies that companies which recruit students for their India operations could well post them abroad later. “IITs can’t interfere then,’’ he says.
