IMPHAL: The Manipur government is looking for an alternative site for the proposed National Institute of Technology following large scale protests by locals against acquisition of 300 acres of private farmland at Kyamgei in Imphal East district near Manipur University.
Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh along with chief secretary Jarnail Singh and other senior officials had inspected Heibokching and Langol Hill ranges in the outskirts of the town in Imphal West district on Saturday to find an alternative site, official sources said on Monday.
A final decision is, however, yet to be taken and an intensive survey would be carried out at these areas again to ascertain whether the institute could be set up there, the sources said.
Ibobi Singh had stressed that the much-awaited NIT should be constructed near the Manipur University or the capital complex keeping in view the security situation of the state as the proposed institute would have students of other states, sources said.
The locals are protesting against the government plans to set up the NIT at Kyamgei as the land was fertile there.
