MUMBAI: Maharashtra Government wants to increase the Post Graduate (PG) medical seats in the state but needs some relaxation in norms of Medical Council of India (MCI).
Replying to a question about the PG medical seats, Higher and Technical Education Minister Dilip Walse-Patil informed the Legislative Council that the Government wants to increase the PG seats.
Altogether 214 PG seats were curtailed by the MCI for lack of infrastructure this year. But they were later restored, the Minister said.
The state is trying to give adequate infrastructure for those restored seats and then it will think to start with new seats, he added.
MCI is having very tough norms for the approval of seats and the Government has demanded to relax them, Walse-Patil said.
Currently, there are 1025 PG seats in the state. After 214 seats were curtailed in May, medical students held demonstrations demanding that they be restored.
