Maha Govt to step up demand for IIM in state
The Maharashtra Government has decided to step up its demand for setting up an Indian Institute of Management.
The Human Resources and Development Ministry has convened a meeting of all state education ministers on July 2 and 3.
"The state is going put some proposals to the HRD Ministry along with other pending demands," State Minister for Higher and Technical Education Dilip Walse Patil said.
Officials from Higher and Technical Education Department also said that setting up an IIM is likely to figure during the meeting.
Maharashtra has more than 120 management institutes but not a single IIM, according to a government report. The financial capital is home to hundreds of corporates.
In its 11th five-year plan, the HRD ministry had announced setting up 45 new higher education institutions -- including 15 schools of technology and management -- besides 14 world-class universities all over the country.
Currently, there are six IIMs in the country. Besides a new IIM at Shillong (already announced), seven more IIMs are being set up in Tamil Nadu, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand and Haryana.
