Include Amity in Universities list:HC to UGC

The Delhi High Court has directed the University Grant Commission to list the Amity University of Uttar Pradesh in the list of universities on its website.

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has directed the University Grant Commission to list the Amity University of Uttar Pradesh in the list of universities on its website.

Allowing a petition filed by Amity seeking direction to apex body to follow the UGC Act, Justice B D Ahmed yesterday asked the commission to conduct periodic inspection of the university and point out deficiencies if any.

"UGC is a public body and performs public functions and although it has discretion in maintaining or not maintaining a list of universities, once the discretion is exercised, it must be reasonable and not arbitrary," the court observed.

The court also asked the UGC to include the university in the non-statuary category under section 2(f) of the Act.

The order came on a petition filed by the Noida-based Amity University alleging the Commission for adopting "unreasonable" approach by not listing it in its website.

Amity submitted that as a result of non display of its name in the website, it has been facing serious problems and students have been denied admission in foreign universities for higher courses.
