IITs could introduce quota in phased manner

The IITs could implement the 27 per cent quota for OBCs in a phased manner after the Supreme Court gave its nod for reservation in institutes of higher education.

NEW DELHI: The IITs could implement the 27 per cent quota for OBCs in a phased manner after the Supreme Court on Thursday gave its nod for reservation in institutes of higher education.

"We cannot implement the 27 per cent quota in one go. It has to be done in phased manner. Let us see how to do this," said Prof Surendra Prasad, Director, IIT-Delhi.

He said the scenario as regards implementation of the quota would be clear in the next two to three days.

"It is too early to react. We have to consult with the Ministry. We will have to think about how to implement it," Prasad said.

There are around 4,000 seats in the seven IITs in the country and as per an earlier plan, the institutes may increase the seats to up to 5,000 if the quota is implemented in the coming academic year
