IISWBM unveils disaster management course
This course will see participation from 25-30 professionals involved in relief and support services.
"The new course is designed not just to prepare people to prevent disasters but also to mitigate the effects of disasters. It is tailor-made to cover all essential activities related to pre-disaster, preparedness on disaster phase and post-disaster phase management," Prof S.P Mukhopadhyay, professor in charge, disaster management programme, said at the inauguration.
"Hazard/risk mapping, land-use planning, rapid assessment of needs, resources required and of course, management, are the other aspects included in the course," he added.
This course will see participation from 25-30 professionals involved in relief and support services attached to the public and private sector. "There will be representation from the police and fire departments, NGOs as well as the PWD, among others," said Prof Mukhopadhyay.
According to Prof Mukhopadhyay, the course is backed by support from WHO, UNDP and the Government of India. "From next year, we may even consider offering this course as a diploma programme," said Prof Mukhopadhyay.
