IIMC appoints Sahadeb Sarkar as Director-in-charge, accepts Uttam Kumar Sarkar’s resignation

IIM Calcutta on Tuesday appointed Sahadeb Sarkar, a professor in operations management group, as director-in-charge of the institute after accepting the resignation of Uttam Kumar Sarkar as director with immediate effect.

The Board of Governors of IIM Calcutta made these decisions at a meeting on Tuesday.

Sahadeb Sarkar’s appointment is in accordance with the provisions of the IIM Act 2017, the institute said in a statement.


Uttam Kumar Sarkar will continue as a professor in the management information systems (MIS) group of the institute, it said.

“The board appreciated Prof Uttam Kumar Sarkar for his valuable contribution as the director of IIM Calcutta and wished him good luck in all his future endeavours,” the IIMC statement said.

He is the second consecutive institute director to resign before completing a five-year term after Anju Seth, the first woman director of IIM Calcutta, quit in 2021, a year before her term ended. Seth had cited a “breakdown in confidence” between her and IIMC board chairperson Shrikrishna Kulkarni in her resignation letter, which was accepted immediately. Uttam Sarkar was subsequently appointed IIMC director in August 2021.
