IIM-L, NID all geared up to implement SC decision
While the SC judgement has prompted the IIMs to defer the announcement of their admissions for the academic year 2008-09, India’s premier design institute National Institute of Design is ready to implement the decision.
Prepared for this since 2007, NIDs admission list, which is to come out in May, will be in accordance with the SC order and the institute will increase its intake from 250 to 387 over three years, said NID director Darlie O Koshy.
For NID, whose academic session begins on June 16, the judgement is timed well. Considering the order has come well in time, we would be able to incorporate the requirements in our merit list that will be released in May. Once we get the fine print of the judgement and suggestions from the ministry, we should be in a position to implement it before we announce the merit list, Koshy said.
Luckily for NID, it had been preparing for this for the past year. Last year we had anticipated the move and had made provision to accomodate additional students. We had sought a grant of Rs 50 lakh to augment the infrastructure of our studios, hostels and classrooms. So now we are ready to handle additional strength of students, he said.
The phased increase in the number of students has been planned already.
As per their calculations, NID should be able to accomodate 255 students in the first year, 307 students in the second yeatr and 387 in the third year across Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar campuses, according to Koshy. Similarly, strength of the Bangalore campus will be augmented in a phased manner, he said.
He said that the institute had bolstered its infrastructure over the last few years and it would not face any problem when it comes to accommodating the students coming in under the Supreme Court order. IIM-L had recently increased seats in its flagship management programme from 280 to 300.
The institute also admits 30 students in its Agri-Business Management programme. With the SC order, another 45 seats might be added to this number and the institute may need to induct more faculty too.
