IIM-A director claims he was 'misquoted'
The director of the Indian Institute of Management here on Wednesday said he was "misquoted" and "misrepresented" in the print media on the issue of purported government interference in the appointment of heads of the prestigious business schools.
"I had yesterday addressed a two-day workshop for journalists organised by the Indian Press Institute here. But I later learnt that I had not spoken to participants but also to reporters," Bakul Dholakia said, referring to his inaugural address at the workshop held in IIM-Ahmedabad.
"None of the remarks that I made was on the process of advertisements issued by the government for the appointment of directors of IIMs," he told a hastily arranged press conference.
"I never talked about the (appointment) process being followed in 2007," he said, adding the process of 2007 was similar to the one followed since 2002.
Dholakia said the process of appointing the directors had undergone a "fundamental change" in 2002.
The government always had the powers to appoint the chairmen and directors of institutes like the IIMs, he said.
Dholakia said the government has assured the IIMs that a "consultative process" would be followed while appointing the directors.
"For the greater autonomy of the IIMs, we had submitted a proposal to the government in March 2005. We are yet to get a feedback," he said.
