NEW DELHI: Indira Gandhi National Open University will involve its various departments in planning out a strategy to work for sustainable use of resources for the development of rural areas.
The university has instituted a chair for sustainable development with eminent scientist Prof M S Swaminathan at its helm.
Swaminathan on Thursday attended a meeting held at the university where he stressed on devising a proper strategy to ensure sustainable development in areas which have harsh climatic conditions.
"IGNOU has several departments which are working on disaster management, energy, IT and knowledge transfer. They can contribute in chalking out a strategy to achieve sustainable development," he said.
"The are areas like Vidharbha, Ladakh, coastal regions and the Himalayan terrain, where the challenge is to ensure sustainable development. We need proper action programmes in these areas," he said.
He said inclusive growth in the country could be achieved through sustainable development by equipping people to manage the environment and the natural resources.
IGNOU has instituted the Chair with the mandate to build capacity of the rural population to reconcile economic resources with environmental issues and develop social safety nets for marginalised people.
"We plan to set up 8,000 tele-centres in villages across the country which will provide technical and other knowledge to rural people on best management of resources," IGNOU Vice Chancellor Prof V N Rajashekharan Pillai said.
The Chair will involve technical institutes in different areas in this mission
