KANCHIPURAM: Hyundai Motors India, which last year gifted 100 cars to Chennai City Police, now plans to donate furniture to needy schools across Tamil Nadu as part its community development programme.
A study conducted recently by the Hyundai Motor India Foundation has found that most schools in the rural Tamil Nadu were in need of good furniture, the company's Managing director H S Lheem told reporters here yesterday.
In some schools, it was found that students sat on the floor for lack of furniture, he said, after handing over 350 pairs of desks and benches to Panchayat Elementary School and Government High School at Irungattukottai near here.
To cover all schools in the state, the company planned to distribute 10,000 furniture sets per year, he added.
The Korean company, which had set up its manufacturing facility at Irigattukottai 10 years ago, has emerged as the country's second largest car manufacturer.
To mark the success, the company was dedicating Rs 100 each per car sold for social welfare programmes, he said.
Hyundai was also undertaking periodic repair works of schools in the six km radius of the Irigattukottai plant.
In October 2006, the company had donated 100 Accent cars equipped with latest equipments to the Chennai City Police.
