Hurry up! Fresh counselling at IITs
Those who undergo fresh counselling will have to send their choice of stream to the IIT centres by July 17.
After the joint entrance exam (JEE), conducted jointly by all the IITs, the counselling session for allocation of streams was held from June 20 to 23 during which selected students were counselled on the availability of seats at the seven IITs, at Benaras Hindu University and the Indian School of Mines (Dhanbad).
| In this merit-based process, students with a higher all-India rank (AIR) hold a better chance of choosing their engineering stream. So, the first ranker can choose not just the stream, but even the IIT where the student wants to pursue it. |
While the process was smooth on the first two days, the streamwise seats available on day three were found to be incorrect. A senior IIT official said, “The information on seats available was wrong on Day Three (June 22). As we didn’t realise that an error had been committed, the information put out at the start of Day Four was also wrong.’’
Due to this error, IIT-Kharagpu , the nodal institute for conducting JEE-2006 , has now cancelled the counselling and selection process held on days three and four.
This means that students like Trupti Bulbule, who has an AIR of 2,867, will have to give a fresh choice for the streams they want to pursue. “I went for counselling on day four (June 23). All seats in IIT-Chennai and IIT-Delhi were filled up. Similarly, IITMumbai and IIT-Kharagpur only had M.Sc courses,’’ she said.
But allotment of courses to candidates with AIR 1 to AIR 1,600 under general category, all SC/ST candidates, and candidates considered under physical disability category remain unchanged , IIT officials said.
Students who undergo fresh counselling will have to send their choice of stream to the IIT centres by July 17. IIT officials said because of the fresh round of counselling, the first semester for new students would be delayed by a week.
