NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday directed the city government to take action agaist private schools which were granted land at concessional rates but were violating prescribed norms of providing free education to poor students.
Giving last opportunity to the schools to comply with the government's directions, a division bench comprising Justice T S Thakur and Justice S N Agarwal directed the schools to file an affidavit in the court stating that they would reserve 15 per cent seats for the poor students.
The bench made it clear that in case the schools fail to file the affidavit, the government can take action against those schools including cancellation of the license.
There are 381 schools that were given land at concessional rate but only 250 of them have filed affidavit stating that they would provide reservation for weaker section in admission.
The High Court had, yesterday, directed private schools to implement 15 per cent freeship from the next academic session on a trial basis.
The court was hearing a PIL which alleged that for the last 40 years, schools had been violating the terms in their lease by not providing free education to the poor students.
