Harnessing Demographic Dividend: Industry has to skill youth, say experts

At a 2-day l conference on Harnessing Demographic Dividend, held as part of the KLE Society's centenary, academicians stressed on vocational education and training.

BENGALURU: At a two-day national conference on Harnessing Demographic Dividend, held as part of the KLE Society's centenary, academicians stressed on vocational education and training. Higher education, integrated with employment-oriented skills development programmes, would make youth employable, the conference paper, which was submit ed to the government, urged.

"Industries should provide opportunities which help students acquire skills along with their formal education," the paper stated. Delhi University Vice Chancellor Dinesh Singh, Peter Ronald D'Souza of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study and Seetham Raju from University of Sydney participated in the conference which covered six topics -human development, employability, challenges of young workforce, role of universities, skill orientation and skill ng India for the next decade.
